The Morisoli-Borges vineyard is located with the Rutherford AVA, on the west side of Hwy 29, south of Niebaum lane. Morisoli-Borges is all about the mid-palate, moderated tannins with layered fruit. Gravel-rich, alluvial and volcanic soils of the Rutherford Bench. The vines are clone 7, with rootstocks 5C and O39-16 -- 20 years old on average.
Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and hand-sorted. Cold soak lasts for 3-5 days, followed by approx. 14 days of fermentation with 3 daily pumpovers. Fermented to dry on skins with an additional 7 to 14 days extended maceration to optimize the flavor, mouthfeel and tannin structure of the wine. Drained, pressed, and transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing. The wine is aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak.
This wine displays beautiful layers of dense, concentrated, dark fruit, with a powerful, voluminous mouthfeel underscored by dusty tannins and well-integrated toasted oak. The voluptuous mouthfeel and polished structure build in intensity to an exceedingly long finish, accentuated by the mouth-coating tannins. Pure black cherry, plum, and black currant combine with subtle sweet notes of vanilla, crème de cassis, licorice and cocoa powder, intertwined with more complex hints of graphite, crushed slate, candied nuts, and roasted coffee beans.
